Both geese are quite closely related as they are members of the genus Branta , which also includes the Redbreasted Goose, Brent Goose, Cackling Goose and Canada Goose. No prizes for guessing this is a Canada Goose x Greylag Not that geese have to be members of the same genus to hybridise. These two Racklehahns were quite different.

A second pond held not only more of the same, but some American Coots and Canada Geese. I mostly just wanted to stare at them, but they shared a pond with numerous Pintails , Gadwalls , American Wigeons , more Hoodies, Common Goldeneye , and a handful of Lesser Scaup , as well as the obligatory Mallards. Most welcome.

After their incarceration, a bit of birdsong would be just what was needed to lift the beats back to their normal ebullient selves but, alack and alas, summer approaches. 4 Canada Goose – Branta canadensis. 137 Laughing Falcon – Herpetotheres cachinnans. 141 Bat Falcon – Falco rufigularis.

The open, dry habitat was perfect for it and the experience was so real, it was almost painful to wake up but alas, no Loggerhead Shrike, just a vivid dream of a migrant bird that could make a mega appearance in Costa Rica. Happy birders looking at an Aplomado Falcon. One of the many Tropical Mockingbirds at the site.

We also passed Golden and Bald Eagles , a few hardy Red-tailed Hawks , and what we thought was probably a Peregrine Falcon although (or because) it zipped by fast. A cruise by the shore revealed some Canada Geese , Common Goldeneye , and Bufflehead. Alas, it was not to be. A mountain range slipped away beneath us.

Old Gamboa Road, a new destination for me, was the biggest revelation; I found some of the specialties of this site, though alas not all. Collared Forest-Falcon. Collared Forest-Falcon. Canada Warbler. The Rainforest Center and Pipeline Road also delivered some of the wonders they are known for. Great Tinamou.
