Africa has more than its fair share of storks, with 8 of the world’s 19 species gracing the continent. Furthermore we have another very special stork-like bird, the regal Shoebill , previously known as the Whale-headed Stork but now placed in its own family. The Saddle-billed Stork has a similar Africa-wide distribution as the Marabou.

I birded savannas of Southern Africa, I birded India and Central America, and I always missed having a local mammal guide with me. Larger species, that is, excluding dolphins and whales. Yes, field guides to other groups of organisms, as there’s hardly any room left in your baggage or the energy to carry it.

Visiting this area for the first time after seeing it for month was a crazy experience. It was the start of the shark season, which meant I saw my first Great White Shark attacks on Northern Elephant Seals , but it was also the best season for whales. The seas were glass still, and far out we could see whales, dozens of the things.

I don’t think I’ve ever done a post on my home patch of Cape Town, South Africa. Endemic Cape Sugarbirds are especially prominent when the leucospermums are in flower and they are joined by one of the most brilliantly colored of all South Africa’s endemics, the Orange-breasted Sunbird.
