But here goes, a list of my favorite sightings for 2023: You stole my heart, you rascal you: We made a major trip to Europe, North Africa, and Turkey in late October, November and early December, combining work with some down time. The work part of this trip included ten days spent in a suburban neighborhood of Marrakesh, Morocco.

Marabous occur throughout tropical and subtropical Africa from Zululand in northern South Africa right up to the arid Sahel region fringing the Sahara Desert, avoiding the closed canopy rainforest zones of central and west Africa.

A week after seeing and photographing the kite I was in Northern Morocco, watching birds on the Merja Zerga, a sprawling estuary that it is an important feeding area for many migrant birds. Audouin’s Gull is an attractive species restricted as a breeding bird to the Mediterranean, but many winter in North Africa.
