One in November 2018 included a one-day birding trip in the Drakensberg area, a mountain range in the border area between South Africa and Lesotho. The Common Waxbill looks like it belongs in a pet shop rather than in the wild. Originally restricted to Africa, it is now also well-established in parts of Europe and South Africa.

They are a commensal species, meaning that they are a wild animal that lives in close association with humans, not as a pet or as a farm animal but more like a parasite, to the extent that it is hard to find them in truely wild settings, and it is hard to find human settlements without them. As for the eagle's nest, I think all of the people who surround the nest each morning are mistaken. Duffy really needs to be the only pet in the home or perhaps with a female dog (ask just in case--the implication was there). A less-than-thrilling update is that South Africa is still considering dog racing.

The one bird I did not see here, however, was the Bateleur Eagle … One highlight in the area is the Saddle-billed Stork , likely to be the tallest species in the stork family. The African Spoonbill is one of the six global spoonbill species, and the main African one (there are also some Eurasian Spoonbills in Africa).

It may indicate, however, that the form of government in Eswatini – it is Africa’s last remaining absolute monarchy – is not ideal. The Lilac-breasted Roller is the national bird of Kenya, but of course, this does not help it pay its bills in South Africa. Thanks for pointing that out.
