St Lucia is a small town on the Southeastern coast of South Africa. One of the most interesting aspects of watching birds in Africa is to see different members of bird families that I already know from China. It seems to consist mainly of hotels and restaurants, as the local economy depends on visitors to the iSimangaliso Wetland Park.

While much of East Africa is deforested, Uganda retains its trees, particularly in places like Bwindi Inpenetrable and Kibale National Parks, two of the largest and most important expanses of forest in the region. It’s still hard for me to wrap my head around this trip, my first on a brand new continent.

The Bearded Woodpecker (Mkuze, South Africa) does not really look any more bearded than many other woodpeckers. The species name “tukki” is not derived from a beloved but now extinct Eastern European car brand but from the Sumatran word for woodpecker. It is the most widespread woodpecker in Africa, claims the HBW.

He subsequently leaves for Peru and gets kidnapped and killed by Sendero Luminoso – the local brand of Maoists. As an aside, outside Africa “bird parties” are called “mixed feeding flocks” – it says it all, doesn’t it? She died in a car accident during a birding trip.

It all seems like such a charmed life … until you have to fly down to Africa for the winter. And if that’s not enough good news for you, this just in: a brand-new bird species (the Cambodian Tailorbird , one of only two endemics in the country) has been discovered living right in Cambodia’s capitol city of Phnom Penh !

Our first shopping trip when we arrived in Florida was to buy a field guide and that afternoon we thought we had a soft drink can sitting on a fence-you know the brand-no, it’s not that…it’s a cardinal! We have never been to South Africa, but it is a lovely book to look at and dream!

I get my own idea of the lunacy of Gooddie’s quest when I talk to a friend who has birded Asia and Africa. If it were just the birds, I’d grab my bins and be on the next plane to Asia or Africa. (That’s Pitta, people, not Antpitta, which is what I foolishly first envisioned, having never birded beyond the Americas.) And mosquitos.
