The Black Swans were adopted to the trust’s coat of arms and breed here during the northern winter. A few other remnants of the former collections might raise eyebrows in some circles. Until the turn of the century, a wildfowl collection and extensive aviaries were kept at the castle.

Happy New Year?

While this allows for the delightful prospect of Thanksgivingakkah, with attendant turkey dreidels and whatnot, it does raise certain perennial questions of the nature of time itself, as applied to birding. Rosh Hashanah, the New Year of the Jewish calendar, has come relatively early season-wise this year.

My Favorite Release

August arrived and I was releasing birds knowing they’d need time to adapt prior to making that long flight across the Gulf of Mexico, headed to South America. Biologists are trying to get them to adopt nest boxes, but no luck with the CA birds so far. Finally, it was just Sophie left.
