One thing I’ve learned birding south Texas this spring is that birds are extremely fond of oranges, including birds you just wouldn’t expect to be into citrus (like the Swainson’s Thrush above). Golden-fronted Woodpecker , Altamira Oriole ) but a ton of neotropical migrants go for it too. Red-headed Woodpecker.

I’ve seen Yellow Warblers in the low shrubs of Western New York pastures, the river valleys of Missoula, and the trees of abandoned industrial sites in New York City. They are not shy, not given to skulking in dense underbrush or retreating to the crowns of great trees.

almost everyone knows a Bald Eagle and a dove, a woodpecker and a Wild Turkey. It takes only a little sociological, symbolic, or entertainment value to get the idea of a bird into the public mind. In the U.S., Knowing what a Lincoln’s Sparrow is is kind of hard (I missed it on the Master Naturalist quiz, to my chagrin.)

After our brief trip thru the great state of Texas, we were headed back into New Mexico, a state I was quite excited to explore. The birds were right next to an old abandoned farm house, and seemed quite happy to have their photo taken, up to a point, but then like the wind, they were gone, out thru the flat desert areas of New Mexico!
