Birding in Florida is unique in that so much of that state’s plenty is evident even to the casual observer. I’ve spent the last week in southwest Florida. It’s a family vacation, sure, but there’s always time for birding and in Florida, the birding often finds you.

The thought of an Oriole foraging in bare winter branches is as foreign as a Petrel on a pool and yet, there it was in my yard picking through an abandoned squirrel’s nest for what appeared to be spiders. The truth is, wintering Baltimore Orioles are unusual, but not unheard of, in the southeast.

Chimpanzees and elephants grieve the loss of family and friends, and gorillas hold wakes for the dead. Sometimes a chimpanzee, usually an adult male, will dance at a waterfall with total abandon. Paul’s family noticed that whenever he was about to have an attack, Tinker would get agitated.

We did however gain an extra night, at our expense in Miami, Florida, all of which was in the dark, so I could not even run out and put a couple of birds on a Florida State List. Our first stop was the Lakeview Drive Ponds, Corey’s primary birding location when he and his family visited the island a few years ago.

South Florida is home to the most racetracks and Greyhound farms and trainers in the country, and you can’t turn on the radio or the television without encountering a commercial for the tracks. He started frolicking with abandon in the dried green moss at the base of Bob, our resident Spathophylum. There is a God, I thought.
