While preparing an article this week for a local newspaper on the nighttime denizens of Tobago, it crossed my mind that I never considered owls as a group, far less target species for any particular outing (except for a select few, upon which I shall expound here). This resulted in my only photograph of this species to date.

Set in an abandoned oil refinery where wildlife is slowly regaining control save for the desperate attempts of golfers to retain all eighteen holes, industrial ghosts loom over rolling freshwater lakes bordered by fifty foot tall trees. These scarce residents are rarely seen – and even when visible, are usually quite wary of humans.

Another puzzling thing to me, as for me, the ideal number of people to live with would be somewhere between zero and one but definitely not above 1. According to Couzens, after laying the eggs, females sometimes immediately abandon their first mate and pair up with another male. End of side note. How efficient. How surprising.

If I was an ornithologist aiming for a grant, I would now definitely highlight the need for more research on this topic. The Grey-Streaked Flycatcher looks only marginally more interesting, and while the Latin species name griseisticta sounds vaguely mysterious, it only means grey-spotted.

A parent bird’s instinct to feed and protect their young is very strong, and they will not willingly abandon their babies. Predators and storms can wreak havoc and human intervention is sometimes needed for survival. Bird diets are specific to each species; liquids and food fed improperly can cause a bird to aspirate, get sick or die.
