Ballantine and Hyman explore how birds communicate and summarize studies on how that communication functions in diverse bird families all over the world. Bird communication is much broader than just vocalization, something I tend to forget. This is a beautifully designed book.

Your last post for 10,000 birds was in 2017. I come from a family where the worse the situation, the faster and more furiously the wisecracks fly, so I suppose I’m hardwired to look for humor. But I only rehabbed birds, so I had to do research and call my mammal rehabber friends. Are you still rehabbing birds? The book is darkly funny.

Describing gull plumage is a combination of science, graphic art, and visual metaphor. So, we start with Dolphin Gull and end with Red-Legged Kittiwake, a totally different sequence from the 2017 eBird listings. I suppose this works with such a small family, but it made my librarian brain ache just a little bit.
