The Santa Paws Drive is an online toy drive dedicated to shelter pets to bring them a little joy and fun while they await their forever homes. This year’s goal is to raise $1,000 in cash donations for each shelter ($6,000 total) plus oodles of toys and treats! How do they do it? With your help of course!

It’s easy to observe this attachment behavior in parrots, especially pets. While we’re used to declarations that our pet parrots “love” us just as we love them, and they can be quite demonstrative in showing their affection, the evidence is thinner for wild birds. Needless to say, this makes them quite pleasant to raise.

Check out this graph adapted from eBird that shows the frequency of sightings in the United States in 2012 – Red-breasted Nuthatches are showing up on birders’ checklists just over sixteen percent of the time! If they each raised nine owlets, the owlets alone would have eaten over 25,000 lemmings from that valley.

In contrast, the females need to make sure not to get duped into raising actual cuckoos – the buntings are a targeted host species ( source ). On the other hand, in the West, mice, and rats are also kept as pets, maybe with the same logic. The female is not quite as attractive but still easily beats most German housewives.

One of the recent developments, which caught an eye of many pet-lovers, is an adoption of three newly born tigers by German shepherd in Chinese Reserve on January 2012.
