Malayan tiger cub births in managed care are rare – just one successful birth in 2012 as part of the SSP. The cubs will rotate separate sessions on the habitat with the Bengal tiger groups that currently reside there. The species also often comes into conflict with people over livestock predation.

However very few birders ever venture to areas off this well-beaten track, so with this in mind, I decided to explore a fascinating but ornithologically little known corner of Ethiopia in January 2012, to see what surprises awaited me. It was late December, 2012, and I slotted into a sizable group under the joint leadership of two highly respected birders. As prolific as the area was, the group was on the move. The group was significantly smaller, only myself and one other person. By 2015 I was assigned to lead a CBC group for the first time.

In 2012, a petition to delist was filed by ranching and agriculture groups and conservative legal organizations. Our analysis indicates the known threats at the time of listing, habitat loss through land use changes, livestock grazing, and vegetation succession, and brown-headed cowbird parasitism, are reduced or adequately managed.
