At 8am on Tuesday 30th August 2012, we arrived at Leeudril after leaving nearby Tweerivieren camp and were thrilled to spot a young female Leopard next to the water tank. The killing of other predators eliminates competition for prey and at the same time also provides calories, so is doubly beneficial.

The lake consists of a large body of open water, a belt of tall yellow grass (where a big orange cat can blend and disappear if it chooses so) and, all around it, thick forests of predominantly teak, interspersed with thickets of bamboo. As our Gypsy comes to a halt, one Oriental Honey Buzzard is investigating the new arrivals.

Rock & Rawhide , a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that aims to increase adoptions for dogs and cats in shelters by providing toys and other items that serve as a form of distraction therapy, reducing the stress and noise levels. This shelter has hundreds of dogs and cats coming and going on a daily basis and need our help!

This thrush actually is among the prey items of the very rare Iriomote Cat, a cat that lives only on a small island. As it is critically endangered (there are only about 100 left), I think it can be forgiven for killing the occasional Pale Thrush (which is listed as Least Concern).

Now and then individual catfish of various species hunt nearer the surface and larger catfish such as the American Channel Cat will take a duck or other water bird. From the vantage of the bottom feeder, the fish takes a variety of prey that passes by. This interesting behavior was reported last month in the OpenAccess journal PLoS ONE.
