The Great Elephant Census found that populations of Savanna Elephants Loxodonta africana have fallen by 30% between 2007 and 2014 (around 144,000 animals poached or population shrunk at a rate of 8% a year, a level higher than their reproduction rate; source https://peerj.com/articles/2354.pdf That was my first Savanna Elephant in the wild.

Since 1995 that same Estonian Ornithological Society has chosen a bird as the bird of the year and this year, 2011, it is the Barn Swallow ! Austria also so honors Hirundo rustica though that honor is watered down a bit by the national animal of Austria, which is the Golden Eagle.

At the far end of the lake stands a tall, dry tree with an eagle that we are struggling to determine and it remains a dark silhouette far too far. Somewhere below that mysterious eagle, at the far shore of the lake, lies one Bengal Tiger … and further to the right – two more! He has earned his tip.

Due to the Ganges floods, their planned weekend of sailing through the labyrinth of channels turned into a week-long stay among about 270 Tigers , according to the 2011 census – the last population inhabiting mangroves and one of the highest concentrations anywhere on the planet!

In 2011 their population was estimated at over 3,000 individuals, increasing steadily at 5-8% every year. Raptors and other predatory birds have largely rebounded, and there seems to be be no shortage of Brown Pelicans, Peregrine Falcons and Bald Eagles. Can you imagine having to go to Alaska just to see our national bird?
