It's just weird how many birds are being killed in England, Scotland and Ireland. A horrific total of 6 eagles, 10 buzzards, 3 red kites, a Peregrine falcon and a sparrowhawk have all been poisoned in recent weeks across Ireland, England and Scotland. And these are just the ones that we know about and have been discovered.

At the far end of the lake stands a tall, dry tree with an eagle that we are struggling to determine and it remains a dark silhouette far too far. Somewhere below that mysterious eagle, at the far shore of the lake, lies one Bengal Tiger … and further to the right – two more! He has earned his tip.

It is a fascinating world of swampy forests of willow and poplar, inhabited by Black Storks , White-tailed Eagles , Eastern Olivaceous and Icterine Warblers (above), among more than 200 other species. Backwaters are a hard place to explore. Yet, I never heard the splash of a beaver tail when it dives.

Marabous have also learnt another trick, and that is to follow vultures and scavenge off the remains of Lion and other large predator kills. They have even been known to kill children who have been incautious enough to approach too closely. They also prey on frogs and crabs.

Kills in Canada, Alaska and Mexico are not included in the count. Texas and North Dakota together account for 88% of the total yearly kill of sandhill cranes. One important reason is the wide discrepancy in mid-winter count survey numbers—in Tennessee those figures were 44,000 counted in 2010 versus only 12,000 counted in 2011.

While these groups were once considered two orders (Caprimulgiformes and Apodiformes), recent work (summarized in Mayr 2010 ) shows that swifts and hummingbirds emerged from within the night birds.
