This is a poor photo I took of this pair’s nest back in 2009. So the persistent Osprey pair began to rebuild their nest … a nest that had survived years of harsh wind and weather… was now being laboriously reconstructed at great speed to begin this nesting season.

Powerful Owl in the Royal Botanical Gardens-Sydney

We had not observed a Powerful Owl since we were living in Portland, Victoria for a few months in 2009, so once the opportunity arose to go looking for one at the Royal Botanical Gardens in Sydney we took it! The Royal Botanical Gardens are a huge area to explore and easily accessed by public transport.

Not only that, but we had a train ride to look forward to! It turned out to be pretty cool.

Questionable Practices at the Calgary Zoo

Incidents include a hippo who died in transport from Denver and a Turkmenian markhor, a species of wild goat, hung itself at the zoo after becoming trapped by a rope. In April 2009, unseasonably cold weather froze two whopping crane eggs. And an incident in June 2009, while it didn’t involve death, certainly drew controversy.

A special Pied Oystercatcher

The parents spent several weeks transporting food to the chick that remained after losing one shortly after it hatched. During some shorebird counts he was observed there in July 2008, June 2009, June 2010 and then in 2011 he was observed back in Roebuck Bay on one occasion and also back with the main flock to the south.
