I can’t even imagine being in a position where my government was telling me to kill my dog, or have it beaten to death. Dog owners in Qinhuangdao, Hebei Province, are even being told to kill their own dogs, or else their dogs will be beaten to death by the police and the owners will be charged a fine. When I was asked if I wanted to read Jeff Corwin's 100 HEARTBEATS (Rodale 2009) I was ambivalent. And managing means killing them, breeding them, and otherwise fiddling with their populations. Corwin tells the story of the Maasai of Kenya, whose culture involved disdain for and slaughter of lions.
