Today, as highly specialized pursuit divers, they are restricted to cool northern waters for a straightforward reason.

The objective wasn’t even birds, it was fur seals. My brother is in town for a few days so I decided to take him to Red Rocks on Wellington’s South Coast to look at the seal haul out. The day was sunny and calm (a novelty), and the time of year is right for seals. Which brings us to yesterday.

Or, Pygmy leaf-folding frogs, Afrixalus brachycnemis, from Tanzania, tiny climbing frogs who lay their eggs in leaves and then fold the leaves over them for protection, sealing the nest with secretions. There is still a lot of work to be done in this area. There is also a lot of work that needs to be done for the conservation of frogs.

Sharks, Cape Fur Seals and even Killer Whales will prey on them in the ocean. From 1978 to 2008 the Namibian population declined from 12,162 pairs to 4,563 pairs. Obviously, the penguins are more vulnerable on land, hence their propensity to nest on offshore islands. In 1979 the South African population was estimated at 56,900 pairs.
