We sing about them, we paint them, we use them as mythic and poetic symbols for our spiritual and emotional feelings, we wear them in myriad and often colorful ways, we adopt them as household pets.

4 The Love Of Animals

We were fully funded by our founder from 1994-2007. Tails Of Aloha is an all volunteer Animal Assisted Therapy Organization, located on Oahu in the state of Hawaii, with animals on all of the major Hawaiian Islands. Tails of Aloha was established in 1994 and received its Non-Profit designation in October 2008.

The 26 essays in When Birds Are Near are all about the real-life and emotional spaces where people overlap with birds. The bird names have changed some, the essay format has broadened, the authors are more diverse, but the ecstasy in writing about the intersection of human and bird remains intact. There is also a third element, only hinted at in the opening–the environmental and scientific necessity of gathering this data to document the importance of keeping the Pacific Northwest waters healthy and uncontaminated by human elements. Fox does an excellent job balancing these three elements, keeping the emphasis on the birds.
