It took place eight years later, in November 2004 by the bank of the Veliko Ratno Island. For the fourth sighing, I have to go back in time, to August 2004, birding the slopes of Mt. But no eagles appeared; or at least none that I was prepared to tick. That puzzles me – who was the first to perch there, an eagle or the hawk?

Since 2004, the three-year averages (2003 to 2012) for nesting pairs ranged from 7,086 to 10,147, all above the 6,000 three-year average identified in the 1997 recovery plan as the threshold to consider reclassifying the species to threatened status.

From 1993 to 2004, biologists released 289 captive-raised whooping cranes into central Florida. He waved me down and I braced myself, expecting him to point out any of the several Bald Eagles I had already spotted. ” Was I? Yes, dear fisherman, yes!

Unfortunately only a small remnant patch of forest remains here and I last visited in 2004 so I’m not sure how much of this remnant patch has fallen victim to the axe. Its always a good idea to keep your eyes skyward here for Eastern Sawwing, Scarce Swift and soaring Crowned Eagles and other raptors.

Yellow-billed Magpie populations took a big hit when the West Nile Virus reached California’s Central Valley in 2004. We have more California Condors , Bald Eagles , and Peregrine Falcons , but there seem to be less Spotted Owls , Burrowing Owls , Sooty Shearwaters. This is a very, very good thing.
