All these people were legends – I barely scraped past 2000 in half a century. It has all Big Five animals and a whole lot of other grumpy mammals. Having learned from my Namibian experience I walked away briskly. So, apart from large vicious mammals and venomous snakes, what else can possibly go wrong while birding?

One study looked at nest failure of ground-nesting birds – while one of the failures was caused by predation by a Red-billed Blue Magpie, 83% of all failures were due to predation by mammals. I think I pointed out in previous posts that mammals are kind of evil. Bad manners, I think.

I had my first swim with Inshore Bottlenose Dolphins in Northland’s Bay of Islands back in 2000, and it was a tripy experience. Leaving from the harbour on boats were tours to swim with one of New Zealand’s most endangered mammal species, the Hector’s Dolphin. South Banks Peninsula.

Some people might still argue whether such a thing as a “birding community” exists, but anyone who shared avian observations on the internet in the late 2000′s and beyond could have been part of a vibrant bird blogging community. The great struggle then, as now, was reaching new readers and cultivating an engaged audience.
