Amazingly, everyone showed up at dawn except for one person, who’d had a near-death experience with me on Colombia’s Sumapaz paramo, an acceptable excuse for a no-show. Light broke and after Couch’s Kingbird I spotted my 2000 th lifer: Crimson-collared Grosbeak. A very good celebratory bird. It was amazing.

Only one species of penguin breeds on the Australian mainland; five additional species breed on sub-Antarctic islands. These “vignettes” are sadly limited due to space considerations.

Its waterproof fold-able covers bring back childhood memories… I must have had some illustrated children book with similar covers – my fingertips remember the experience. For species with more than one subspecies in the region, the separate resident/breeding ranges of the distinct subspecies are indicated on the map. What I don’t like?
