In Taiwan there are also migratory shorebirds passing through and they also upload photographs of individually marked birds on their website and detail the history of the birds. It is truly remarkable and it is happening right here in Broome with our migratory shorebirds and all across the world with a huge variety of species.

There are two sub species of Red Knot here and the piersmai sub species is a much darker red colour than the rogersi sub species and easily identified in breeding plumage. They are in large flocks when they roost of several thousand birds, but often they will roost among their own species. These two species are renowned for preferring to lie flat on the wet sand once the tide drops rather than stand around waiting for the tide to drop. Grey-tailed Tattler “35” in 2012.

Mostly the ducks were Red-breasted Merganser and Greater Scaup , the two most prevalent species on the pond, but there were a few other birds mixed in as well. I have had similar experiences at Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge and you are so right on when you say “am I ever glad that I am a birder!&# Wicked, right?

Here is a little test-there are 6 species of shorebird in the photo-can you identify them? I am currently busy entering data on a voluntary basis for about 3500 shorebirds, so everything is up to date when I get reports of these birds in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Korea in future weeks.
