Shark Bay and Monkey Mia

10,000 Birds

Shark Bay is one of the most famous tourist destinations in West Australia, and until recently was therefore not a place I was particularly interested in visiting. Shark Bay is pretty. Shark Bay is an enormous feature, a huge bay surrounded by deserty-scrub right on the edge of the tropics. Really really pretty.

Biting the bullet or jumping the shark? A potential Baikal Wagtail in Germany

10,000 Birds

Now, if you quickly call to mind the pattern of Asian species reaching Europe as vagrants, you will remember that most are from Siberia. Well, of course I don’t know, but it seems quite plausible that the “white wagtails” are amongst the species/forms most underidentified in Europe. Why is that so?

Birding Shanghai in September 2022

10,000 Birds

The ongoing destruction of Nanhui, where the species can frequently be seen on migration, certainly will not help. Judging from the facial expression of this White-shouldered Starling , I would rather not have an annoyed bird of this species as a roommate. The species has reversed sex roles, with the males doing the incubating.

A Single Purple Gallinule

10,000 Birds

In November, I visited the Shark Valley Visitor Center and nature trails with my mother and husband, neither of whom have ever seen this part of the Everglades before. Cute right? The species was a life-bird for my mother. Purple Gallinules are what rainbows would look like if reincarnated into a bird. Baby alligators.

Shearwater Chase in Costa Rica

10,000 Birds

Earlier in the day, as we ventured out towards the deep waters off of Malpais, Costa Rica at 6 in the morning, another Galapagos Shearwater was the first real pelagic species we encountered. Unexpected, sudden moments of excitement came in the form of a few leaping Thresher Sharks (!), Were there going to be any birds?
