They are not captioned, which means that the user must search the text for plumage descriptions to figure out the identity of birds, particularly birds that are clearly not adult males. Using the icons to locate specific bird families takes a little getting used to, but if you do it often it works well as a finding tool.

I was happy to see that the Resources section in the back of the book covers web sites and books on birds, photography techniques and computer tools programs not covered in the book (like Photoshop), and nature photography forums. This review is based on a reading of the eBook format, and I have mixed feelings about it.

Instead, the studies Brooke summarizes and other resources are listed in an extensive Notes section.

Beloved family pet Dalmatian, Pepper, is stolen, and after several weeks of searching is discovered to have been experimented on at a hospital and died on the table when researchers tried to implant her with an experimental cardiac pacemaker. In the next couple of days, I specifically searched for this species and lo and behold: It turned out I had been seeing and (mostly) hearing the Gerygone for more than 10 days already, and commonly so, but never noticed it as I thought all birds of this general kind were either female sunbirds or Ioras. I was shocked!

Also, a search for one of the suspected extinct species, Ivory-billed Woodpecker, finds it in the main section. A second quick finding tool is the Visual Index of Bird Families on the inside front and back covers, presenting the 86 chapters in order with bird images, text, and page numbers. The wonder of research?

The geographic distribution is different, so if I had some basic knowledge I may have been able to figure out the species from the locations of the photos, but first of all, I don’t have this expertise, and second, that’s a lot of work for a search that should take less than a minute.
