Soon afterwards I flew to Trinidad and Tobago to research for an article, and was hugely impressed with the small Swarovskis when I used them to watch tanagers and toucans in the rainforest. Fast forward to 2022, and a bird-photographer friend raved to me about the new Swarovski NL Pure binoculars he had tried at the Birdfair.

I didn’t travel much this year, with a June family trip to California and Nevada and a four-day trip in July to Trinidad and Tobago being my only opportunities to get birds not in the northeastern United States. Seeing that it was actively hunting and operating like an otherwise normal Green Heron , I opted to photograph it, research it and possibly return and continue observing the bird. Closer looks revealed a plumage I couldn’t have imagined even if I was deep into a hallucinogenic journey. I revisited my oiled theory.
