The resident fashion critic of eBird is not very impressed with the Orange-backed Woodpecker , stating that it is “dressed all in patchwork” It has one of the more stupid-sounding genus names – Reinwardtipicus, which is made up of the name of Dutch naturalist Prof. Lucky him, right? Though he ended up dead anyway.

Researchers at Dauphin Island Sea Lab in Alabama conducting a two-year study focusing on the diets of Tiger Sharks in the Gulf of Mexico have made an alarming discovery: not only are these sharks eating the expected fish and other assorted marine organisms, but they’re also eating land-based songbirds!

campus gardens – the Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Centre, located 3 km east of the town of Turrialba. In a rock-garden in the middle of the river, one Fasciated Tiger-Heron was fishing, with both Amazon and Green Kingfishers nearby.

I never researched the resort, imagining that it lacked the amenities my family wanted, but visiting for dinner allowed us to rent its grandeur without forking over the considerable room rates. It is not the smallest woodpecker in the world, that honor goes to the Barred Piculet , at 8CM, but this one is pretty darn close. While we were in a beautiful Air BnB, which was owned by some awesome bird lovers, I personally had not done enough research on the area. We had a nice lunch, and explored the area behind the facility.
