These three groups are already operating mobile veterinary clinics and other services in Haiti, and planning to go to Chile when they’re allowed in: IFAW (International Fund for Animal Welfare). Veterinarians, technicians and others can volunteer to travel to Chile to help groups such as World Vets.

Fortunately the donkey was rescued by the Society for the Protection of Animals Abroad (SPANA). Like many poor people in Morocco, Humar’s owner had little chance of being able to afford a vet – or even find one close by. It was Los Angeles, after all, where mileage has no bearing on time, but where time was precious for my little rescue on this crystal morning. I’d been volunteering at rescues through my young adulthood, and I was training as a cat socializer, teaching terrified felines — the unlucky victims of cruel people — to trust humans again.

We’ve dealt with many animal welfare agencies around the world, but have never encountered one so responsive, helpful and positive as the Humane Society of Grand Bahama. Since then, their vet has discovered that Fortune, the kitten with the eye problem has a congenital condition called Coloboma.
