Rancho Naturalista Lodge, Costa Rica, or When Harry Met Mercedes

Within 140 ac / 60 ha of Rancho Naturalista’s Reserve, there are 500 bird species – or 55% of the nation’s total! And then Rancho’s in-house guide, Harry Barnard (cover photo, standing), came around with a mug of steaming coffee to confirm my unspoken, tip-of-the-tongue suspicion: yes, it’s a Red-throated Ant-Tanager.

Getting out of line

Orlando is so rich in roadside and overhead birds that I kept a list of species seen from the car which ran to 30+ on the first morning and included a Bald Eagle nonchalantly sitting on a street lamp by a Target store. Wicked, right? Hat-tip to Stella. This is not good habitat for a Redgannet ; I had to get out of line.
