At any rate, my brief visit to Sepilok showed me that it is a worthy destination in its own right. Sepilok is a spotlighter’s dream, and our hotel organised a trip for us with a warden from the Orangutan Sanctuary. In retrospect I would have picked trying to hit both, but perhaps that would have been unsatisfying too.

However, these islands that were predator-free sanctuaries eventually turned into ecological sinks. Rabbits were introduced to the island by guano miners, which turned the previously verdant island into a giant sand dune; almost all vegetation was wiped out. A species, wiped off the earth, never to exist again. What a horror!
