The Egyptian government has begun slaughtering all of the pigs in the country. From the NY Times: Egypt has begun forcibly slaughtering the country’s pig herds as a precaution against swine flu, a move that the United Nations described as “a real mistake” and one that is prompting anger among the country’s pig farmers.

I received an e-mail from the well-meaning Wendy at Compassion in World Farming (which I find an odd combination of words) regarding Egypt's pig cull and asking me to send my protest to the Egyptian Government. But though the pigs weren't originally destined for a mass grave, weren't they destined for slaughter nonetheless?

In other words, horses, like pigs and cows and chickens, are commodities whose worth has a dollar value to people, and we should be doing what we can do maximize that dollar value. Not approving the institutionalized slaughter of the horses we claim to hold so dear lowers that value. Tags: Activism Current Affairs Ethics.

We are currently doing an investigation on pig farms in Spain, including intensive and extensive/free-range farms (tho extensive ones are scarce since intensive ones are the majority in the industry). It's just another excuse people have concocted because they like the taste of cow/pig/chicken/fish flesh. Why choose enslavement, rape, domination and slaughter? So we went from a ban to a vague statement about the prevention of abuse that clearly doesn't consider slaughter abusive. Or if it's brutal it is necessary.

The problem with that statement is it's not as if farmers are searching "the wild" for cows, pigs, chicken and fish, plucking them from their homes, and plopping them on a farm to live out their (shortened) lives prior to slaughter. They are created to be slaughtered. Tags: Ethics Language. Yes, that's true.

People in South Florida are still in an uproar over the mutilation and slaughter of 19 house cats (allegedly) by 18-year old Tyler Weinman, who was declared mentally competent and not a danger to himself or others (!). We don't say we hate pigs and want to see them writhing in pain and slaughtered. We don't say we hate cows.
