As the rice paddies near Kota Kinabalu described in an earlier post , Tanjung Aru beach is not really a major birding spot in its own right. That is mainly the Philippines, as indicated by the species name lucionensis (Luzon is the Philippines’ biggest island). Or US$ 8 for the pair below.

Mantanani is a biological link between Borneo and the islands of the Philippines. Like many small islands that fringe the Philippines side of Borneo, it has a handful of species that are mostly found in the Philippines, or species that are supertramps, meaning they occur on many of the smaller fringing islands in the Indo-Malayan archipelago.

The bird “spent five months on Mindoro Island in the Philippines during the non-breeding season and migrated through Taiwan, the Chinese east coast, and the Korean peninsula” and on to the Russian Far East (indicating a certain lack of solidarity with Ukraine). Apparently, the authors of this paper think so.

We shouldn’t be looking at a flower just as a food source for a sunbird or hummingbird or whatever your local equivalent is, they are fascinating organisms in their own rights. Although some are perhaps more fascinating than others (as with birds I guess).

Five species are not illustrated, the “probably extinct” Ivory-billed and Imperial Woodpeckers, and the little-known, range-restricted Rusty-necked Piculet (tiny area in South America), Atlantic Woodpecker (Brazilian endemic), and Yellow-faced Flameback (endemic to west-central Philippine islands).
