You may think of penguins as cold-adapted and they are, but there are penguins living in temperate and tropical areas as well.

Across the world’s northern oceans, 24 species of auklets, murres, puffins, guillemots, and related seabirds make a living catching food beneath the waves and breeding, often in large colonies, on coastlines and islands. Unlike the southern hemisphere’s penguins, however, alcids can also use those flipper wings to fly.

It was a pelagic trip organized by See Life Paulagics and it was a pretty memorable trip with five species of shearwater, Leach’s Storm-Petrels , Wilson’s Storm-Petrels , a variety of dolphins, some sharks, and a variety of other sea life. South Polar Skua before dawn. Awesome! ….

If you want to see a virtual fly through of what the new facility will look like, here is a video: I am pretty excited about the new building, especially because there will be a tunnel of sharks to walk under, and more penguins! Penguins are one of my favorite things to visit at the aquarium.

There are, for example, the Penguins and Diving Ducks. This Yellow-crowned Amazon was not quite as vociferous as his Central American cousins And like many of these birds, I too love to spend time beneath the water – there are few things better than free diving or scuba diving with dolphins, whale sharks or coral reef fish.

Listservs across the state suddenly lit up with posts about where and how many of these alcids were being seen, with records streaming in from such unlikely places as Dry Tortugas National Park, Key West, Fort de Soto, and as far west as Pensacola — there had been only one previous record of this species in the Gulf of Mexico before 2012.

It was a Benguela Nino year, and pelagic seabirds were in super-abundance in the south eastern Atlantic, with the total of species by variety and number exceeding all expectations for the birders on the inaugural trip as we pitched and wallowed about in the rolling swells on our way out to the trawling grounds.
