Larry starts us off right with an owl that makes birders drool: I was able to see and photograph many great birds in 2014 but my Best Bird of the Year would have to be the Great Gray Owl , the largest Strix in North America. I did that with Peacocks & Picathartes – Reflections on Africa’s birdlife (published by Penguin Random House South Africa ). When was the last time you chose a book by its covers? In case you didn’t know, yes, there is an indigenous peacock living in Africa, the Congo Peafowl.

Additionally, each of Antarctica’s so-called endemic species ( Emperor Penguin, Antarctic Petrel and South Polar Skua ) actually wander more widely in the southern oceans and have been known to turn up in other locations. Its numbers are declining rapidly due to feral cats and this duck is currently listed as vulnerable.
