The Sounds of a Tiger-Heron

One of my highlight stories was my first experience with the sounds of a Rufescent Tiger-Heron. During my first few knights in the rainforest of eastern Peru, I knew nothing about animal vocalizations. Insects sounds taper off after a few hours letting owls, nightjars, pygmy-owls and potoos finally be clearly heard.

What Happened in Costa Rica on Global Big Day, 2017

Could we still see an owl in the rain? As I approached her neighborhood, the rain stopped, at least around there, so I played a few screech-owl sounds while we packed the car with important supplies, namely the food and drink cooler. Our Rufescent Tiger-Heron. Could we still hear one? How could we make it happen?

Best Bird of the Weekend (Second of March 2011)

Moved by an unseasonable bout of optimism, I went owl-chasing this weekend and actually encountered what has been a true nemesis bird for me: Northern Saw-whet Owl ! I suspect though that once we get past the Ides of March (beware!) we might have a shot at another spring. And isn’t that an inspiring thought? Wicked, right?
