The Sounds of a Tiger-Heron

One of my highlight stories was my first experience with the sounds of a Rufescent Tiger-Heron. During my first few knights in the rainforest of eastern Peru, I knew nothing about animal vocalizations. To my surprise, the bizarre sounds were made by a Rufescent Tiger-Heron!!! What Happened in Costa Rica on Global Big Day, 2017

Although it was partially hidden by the mist over the marsh, we could still see enough to count Rufescent Tiger-Heron. Our Rufescent Tiger-Heron. That title went to a team in Peru that identified 309 species, second place going to a team in Brazil with 307 species (check out the totals per country !).

Birding crème de la crème: Asia – Corbett to Taman Negara

So I lowered my threshold to 500 and that worked well… for Costa Rica and South America, that is (especially Peru). Most of the India data comes from The 100 Best Birdwatching Sites in India India Some 6-8 hours north of New Delhi, Corbett National Park is India’s first and oldest tiger reserve. The best season is March to August.

Best Bird of the Weekend (Second of March 2011)

I suspect though that once we get past the Ides of March (beware!) we might have a shot at another spring. And isn’t that an inspiring thought? Moved by an unseasonable bout of optimism, I went owl-chasing this weekend and actually encountered what has been a true nemesis bird for me: Northern Saw-whet Owl !
