Fish and Wildlife Service has listed the “Rufa” population of Red Knot ( Calidris canutus rufa ) as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). migration corridors from Argentina in the Southern tip of South America to Canada.

Cliff Swallows migrate to North America from their wintering grounds in South America to nest in large colonies, sometimes numbering in the thousands. All swallows are included under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918 as migratory insectivorous birds and as such are protected by state and federal regulations.

The question is why these natives of rural areas in southern South America (east of the Andes) have been so spectacularly successful in establishing their colonies. Some articles speculate that the nests offer protection against the cold. There are a lot of pet psittacines out there that escape or are released. and Sam Logue.

Larry starts us off right with an owl that makes birders drool: I was able to see and photograph many great birds in 2014 but my Best Bird of the Year would have to be the Great Gray Owl , the largest Strix in North America. Once endangered, they lead happy, protected lives, oblivious to the tourists who love them.

Originally from India and the vicinity, it is believed that they had already undergone two major expansions – through Asia Minor in the 1600s, and then across Europe in the 1900s – when they first appeared in North America.
