The “who knows what else” comes from this site being situated among good-sized tracts of lowland forest connected to the big forest block in Nicaragua. One of the only feeders that sees Brown-hooded Parrots. In fact, a friend of mine saw a Harpy Eagle at Laguna in 1998.

Nicaraguan Grackle only lives in marshes around Lake Nicaragua. Back in the town of Los Chiles, we met with the rest of the group and scoped Scaled Pigeons and White-crowned Parrots in the rain until we saddled up and did some late afternoon birding at Medio Queso. We had several Least Bitterns.

Yeah, you might see some edge and open country species but since you can see those same birds at the edge of forests along with toucans, parrots, puffbirds, and antbirds, I strongly suggest skipping the open areas and heading to the largest areas of rainforest that you can find ASAP.

The end result is that the whole “biographic” area (NCA plus southern Mexico and northern Nicaragua) is home to 41 endemic bird species. So, we find out that that White-fronted Parrot looks similar to Yellow-lored Parrot, except that White-fronted has red lores and lacks the dark ear patch.
