Sarah Atlas is a search-and-rescue dog handler, one of many civilian volunteers who serve with New Jersey Task Force 1. They were to be deployed to Ground Zero with 200 other members of New Jersey Task Force 1, including structural engineers and medical workers, as well as other search-and-rescue people.

On the other, she sounded like she might have a respiratory infection, I didn’t have the right drug on hand, and I was scared to death that I might go down in history as the killer of the birdie Methuselah. She was rescued, put back into her crate, and returned to the Raptor Trust. I wanted to put her in the Mayo Clinic.

John grew up near the Great Swamp Wildlife Refuge in New Jersey, is a gifted photographer , and has an easterner’s view of snowfall. A descendant of those little brown blobs–or, at least, a relative—was Emily, rescued by Seymour and her husband Bob, and made the subject of one of the tracks on her terrific new pop-rock music album, There Are Birds. Seymour lives in New Jersey but she gets around, too. I know that you are only passing through.
