Each day, the small bird then has to fly down and find a resting place, an area to feed and take shelter. If it finds a good spot to survive for several months, a spot with enough food and shelter, it might be able to fly all the way back to the north for another summer of song and nesting.

There are plenty of lookouts and shelters, but there is no drinking water available at the toilet facilities, so you need to carry plenty of water. There are also wild boars and macaque monkeys and you are advised to not rustle plastic bags, because they associate the noise with food.

We managed to see both species of monkey, though – so we were ultimately well satiated. Rufous Crab Hawk This particular wetland spills onto the sheltered southern coast – worlds apart from the roaring Atlantic pounding the east coast. Occasional fly-bys of pairs and trios of Red-bellied Macaws kept us on our toes.

The causes were the usual reasons for island extinction—deforestation by both humans and invasive plants that crowded out native plants, hunting, and invasive rats, mongoose, monkeys, and, of course, feral cats. Women gathered their long skirts and hurried for the shelter of stores. Children screamed and ran for home. Horses bolted.
