In Central America, that translates to King Vultures , flocks of Scarlet Macaws , exciting mixed flocks, lots of uncommon forest birds, daily monkeys, and trails with the tracks of Puma, tapir, and Jaguar. As befits an end of the road destination, Luna Lodge is true wilderness birding.

Lots of great birds in this pine-spruce bog habitat: Purple Finches , Least Flycatchers , many wood-warblers, but no sign of my jinx bird (other life bird possibilities for me here included Great Gray Owl , Spruce Grouse , Northern Three-toed Woodpecker and American Black-backed Woodpecker ). A toast to a great life bird.

In fact, we saw two species of monkey, our only sloths, lots of coatis, and my rarest ever mammal sighting—a Jaguarundi —right on site. Seriously, Panama raises the art of under-communication to new, deplorable heights. Red-crowned Woodpecker. Lineated Woodpecker. Crimson-crested Woodpecker. Howler Monkey.

Ruby-crowned Tanager and Fawn-breasted Tanager can be seen here and recently a Blonde-crested Woodpecker has taken up residence and seems to like this area. Look out for the Howler Monkeys too. At the furthest reach of the garden, a boardwalk has been built to raise visitors above the forest floor.
