A few states still have no checklists at all: Nebraska , Minnesota , Iowa , Kentucky , West Virginia , Mississippi , and Alabama. For example, my list of the Top 25 National Wildlife Refuges for birding includes an excellent location in Minnesota ( Minnesota Valley NWR ). Even the nation’s capital has been ignored.

Fish and Wildlife Service Director Dan Ashe today announced as part of Great Outdoors Month the agency is proposing to expand fishing and hunting opportunities on 21 refuges throughout the National Wildlife Refuge System. National wildlife refuges provide premier outdoor recreational opportunities across the Nation.

It’s a real shame, though, because these battlefields can be a real haven for wildlife and are often located in parts of the country that don’t otherwise have a lot of preserved land. While Civil War-related national parks are recognized for their historical importance, their ecological significance is often overlooked.
