Shark fins are also dried and used in alternative medicine and ancient medical practices. Claims for shark fins include relieving joint pain and curing cancer, though no research is available to back any of these claims. For example, shark fin soup is a delicacy in most of Asia, especially China.

It was very touching to read a comment from Mayr to a more non-scientific article by Liebers & Helbig in a German birdwatching magazine about the Herring Gull not being a ring species, where Mayr applauded them and was happy not only over but beyond the moon about the research. Though it is certainly bad news that the U.S.
