It’s when we lost the mammoths, the sabre-tooth cats, the giant ground sloths, the elephant birds, the marsupial lions, and other iconic giants. And if we keep exploring the undelved nooks and crannies of our globe, we’re sure to make up the difference, right? How many have we lost, have we never even known? What a horror!

Birding the Dampier Downs Road

Along the track we noticed a variety of prints including birds, marsupials and more recently wild camels. The largest of the bird prints belonged to the Australian Bustard and we encountered one right against the track and I was able to take a photo through the car window without disturbing it. Where the Kingfishers Are

More importantly, it is a fantastic area to watch birds in its own right. The Northern Brown Bandicoot ( Isoodon macrourus ) is a marsupial of the forest floor. The camping ground is at the northern end of the Tableland, but is also convenient for the Daintree and Cape Tribulation, another good birding and wildlife area.
