A few days before my backyard birding afternoon, my husband and I had visited the Louisiana and Texas coasts, seeking birds in the incredible wildlife refuges that shelter wintering waterfowl and so much more. On that trip, we actively sought new species, moving from one place to another with drive and determination.

It provides shelter for many songbirds and water-associated animals, including the river otter, turtles, beaver, American pelicans, ospreys, and migratory songbirds. The Louisiana black bear’s threatened status warrants protection under sections 7 and 9 of the Endangered Species Act. The refuge is already open to sport fishing.

Warblers, thrushes, buntings, and other migrants move across the Gulf of Mexico in an extremely stressful, marathon flight from the Yucatan Peninsula to the Gulf Coast of Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, and Florida before spreading throughout the flyways and heading north. And for a narrow window of time, it is a vital migratory stopover.
