Red-crowned Parrots at Irvine Regional Park, Orange County, California

Quite a few species are well-established and breeding from San Diego to Los Angeles and beyond. I know that the Acorn Woodpeckers were none too happy about the parrots being in the oak trees at Irvine Regional Park and were constantly chasing the parrots away from the trees that were loaded with acorns.

They’ve Got an Awful Lot of Birds in Brazil.

We (we being my friend Ian and Steve from Los Angeles) were a little frantic, thinking we’d never, ever see them again. Favorite Woodpecker: This is a toughie. We saw 15 woodpecker species, some, like Campos Flicker, colorful and photographable, some, like Crimson-crested Woodpecker, large and, yes, strikingly crested.

ABA-Area Bird Number 500!

I could go for the American Dipper that was reported in the foothills northeast of Los Angeles. I watched the bird for a full fifteen minutes as it foraged, chased a Lesser Goldfinch off its branch, was chased off a branch in turn by an Acorn Woodpecker , and chipped its now familiar chip the entire time.

Where Are You Birding This First Weekend of March 2011?
