For now, I present a story of an excellent day''s birding on a visit to Los Angeles last week.]. There are two excellent things about birding Los Angeles County: the weather is always beautiful (well, maybe hot, but I’m one of those no-humidity=great weather people) and the diverse range of birding habitats.

Additional helpful design features include the names of family groups against a yellow-and-white striped background on every page corner and having every bird image facing right (except for that Common Loon chick!), I’ve missed this information, especially when I travel to Los Angeles to visit my daughter and her family.

We (we being my friend Ian and Steve from Los Angeles) were a little frantic, thinking we’d never, ever see them again. Favorite Woodpecker: This is a toughie. We saw 15 woodpecker species, some, like Campos Flicker, colorful and photographable, some, like Crimson-crested Woodpecker, large and, yes, strikingly crested.

I could go for the American Dipper that was reported in the foothills northeast of Los Angeles. I watched the bird for a full fifteen minutes as it foraged, chased a Lesser Goldfinch off its branch, was chased off a branch in turn by an Acorn Woodpecker , and chipped its now familiar chip the entire time.

The Plain Sunbird is the plain vanilla version of the otherwise often very colorful family (ok, a very low-budget sort of joke). They quote Yascha Mounk: “At its best, it [nationalism] can inspire a white Christian living in rural Tennessee to feel special concern for a Hispanic atheist living in Los Angeles—and vice versa.”

The mountains of southern California are a necessary escape from the heat, smog, and suburbia that can plague the denizens of places like Orange County and Los Angeles. The original plan had been for the entire family to head up to Mount Baldy and take the ski lift up and enjoy some short hikes in the mountain air.
