I’ve been leading a small but faithful group on Trinidad for several years to count birds within a livestock farm that is generally restricted to the public (you can read about some of those shenanigans here ); this was the first time I was to embark on a CBC on the smaller island of Tobago.

These births are critical to help preserve the species. These newborn cubs will add to the genetic diversity of the Malayan tiger population and contribute to conservation efforts for the species. The births are part of park’s partnership in the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Species Survival Plan® (SSP).

They’re all named for livestock. Hat-tip to Stella. It didn’t take much imagination to name Cowbirds or Cattle Egrets or Cattle Tyrants , but there’s more fantasy, even more wit, involved in the naming of other bovine birds. The genus Bucephala includes three familiar ducks with big heads. Wicked, right?
