The Egyptian government has begun slaughtering all of the pigs in the country. From the NY Times: Egypt has begun forcibly slaughtering the country’s pig herds as a precaution against swine flu, a move that the United Nations described as “a real mistake” and one that is prompting anger among the country’s pig farmers.

I received an e-mail from the well-meaning Wendy at Compassion in World Farming (which I find an odd combination of words) regarding Egypt's pig cull and asking me to send my protest to the Egyptian Government. But though the pigs weren't originally destined for a mass grave, weren't they destined for slaughter nonetheless?

The problem is that people are abandoning and neglecting horses, and to address that problem--to address the problem that people abandon horses--we'll kill the horses? Not approving the institutionalized slaughter of the horses we claim to hold so dear lowers that value. Do we recommend killing those children?

The problem with that statement is it's not as if farmers are searching "the wild" for cows, pigs, chicken and fish, plucking them from their homes, and plopping them on a farm to live out their (shortened) lives prior to slaughter. They are created to be slaughtered. The choice isn't the wild or the farm. Yes, that's true.

People in South Florida are still in an uproar over the mutilation and slaughter of 19 house cats (allegedly) by 18-year old Tyler Weinman, who was declared mentally competent and not a danger to himself or others (!). The four counts of burglary he is being charged with carry a heftier sentence than the animal killing.

There will be no greyhound corpse on our table, no turkey corpse and no pig corpse. When in the position of having the choice, which so far is always, I'd rather choose not to have someone killed for me. This is a tough one to even dignify as it's not a good reason for killing someone. All it takes is a decision.

It's just another excuse people have concocted because they like the taste of cow/pig/chicken/fish flesh. If you don't have to enslave, rape, dominate, or kill someone (or have someone else do it for you), why would you?
