The result might be that the cell recognizes itself as messed up and kills itself, or some other cell does it in, or in many cases, the cell will inappropriately produce a chemical that will have a negative effect elsewhere. It is a very nice bit of science. For the seabirds of this area of Japan, this could be a Tern for the worse.
